Are you learning now, daily or weekly? If not, you may be in for a challenging ride in your career. The career and industry that I have had have been disrupted a few times, and the outcome is that I was laid off twice! From that experience, I realized decades ago that upskilling or skill stacking is a constant in my career life. Till now, I am still trying to learn new things!

The future of work is evolving even faster than ever, and at the center of this transformation is the growing importance of future skills. According to the recent World Economic Forum’s (WEF) 2025 Future of Jobs Report, industries worldwide are shifting towards skills-based hiring, emphasizing the need for individuals to build a diverse skill stack to stay competitive. Traditional career paths give way to a more dynamic job market where adaptability, continuous learning, skill stacking, and multi-disciplinary expertise are essential for long-term career survival.

To begin with, gone are the days when a degree alone guaranteed career success. For instance, as a hiring manager myself, when I am considering a candidate, the first thing I do is look at the skill sets he or she has. After that, I will only look at the candidate’s experience and education background.

For the prospective employee, skill stacking is not a choice; it is a must!

For instance, a marketing professional who understands data analytics and automation will be more valuable than one relying solely on traditional marketing knowledge. Amid the digital takeover, especially in the era of AI and automation, especially over repetitive tasks, uniquely human skills—such as critical thinking, communication, and leadership—will take the central stage.
