I think we are all quite familiar with this phrase. For Gen X, this may feel like images of face-to-face coffee shop meetups, old-school business cards, and contacts saved in our phonebook.
But today, the world is in a different place. We now live in a digital reality world where influence is measurable, public, and often quantified by your number of followers.
So that begs the question: Does growing a digital network still matter for Gen X?
I would possibly say, yes.

As a matter of fact, the emergence of social media has redefined what it means to have a network digitally and how you can leverage the propagation effect to your advantage.

Does the value of followers work in our case, the Gen Xers? We are the generation that watched the world go from analog to digital. We know relationship matters, but many of us have not yet translated that skill to the online arena.

Or…
You’re launching a business. With a network already built, your launch audience isn’t zero. It’s 20,000 strong.
So yes, network is your net worth applies more than ever. Especially if you know how to use it. And of course, if your network continues to expand, being an influencer is definitely an option!

Personally, I nurture my network on LinkedIn. I do not really do it for my other channels. And it’s not easy for sure, and needs concerted efforts and time.
Here are the good practices to start:
Start with One Platform — LinkedIn for professionals, Instagram for visuals, TikTok for storytelling, etc.
Be Authentically Valuable — Share real insights, lessons learned, or commentary that helps others.
Post Consistently — Once a week is a good start. Regularity builds familiarity.
Engage With Others — Comment meaningfully, reply to DMs, join conversations. Networking isn’t one-way.
Offer Help, Not Hype — Focus on building trust before making a sale or pitch. For example, please do not start to sell after a connection!

Are you here to build thought leadership? Gain clients? Share a cause? I think its important to be very clear on what we want to achieve. Otherwise, it can be draining and leading burnout.
