Going Retro: Why Gen Z Is Carrying Dual Phones

going retro - why gen z is carry dual phones

The yesteryear technology is somehow making a comeback! In an era of technology advancing at lightning speed, Gen Z is taking an unexpected turn—embracing older iPhones and digital cameras to capture nostalgic, vintage-style photos. This movement is known as “Youngtro” (a blend of “young” and “retro”). As a result, today’s young ones are embracing the dual phone devices lifestyle, carrying the latest smartphones for modern conveniences and older devices specifically for the raw, imperfect aesthetic they offer.

The Allure of Vintage Photography

Unlike modern smartphone cameras that prioritize high resolution, clarity, and high dynamic range, older iPhones like the iPhone 5S and first-generation iPhone SE produce images with a distinct color palette, softer tones, and subtle grain that feel authentic and unfiltered. It felt like going back in time to enjoy the warmth of early 2000s digital photography. This is very different from today’s High-Resolution photos generated by the flagship devices of modern times.

This retro trend points toward a cultural shift toward authenticity. I guess many Gen Z users crave something rawer—something that feels real rather than digitally manufactured. (Ironically, they are still digitally manufactured but with yesteryear technology!) Older iPhones and compact digital cameras can deliver just that, making every snapshot feel like a moment frozen in time.

Incorporating Retro Lifestyle: Carrying the Old and the New

Gen Z is Carrying the old and new iphones

There is no technology swapping. Instead, Gen Z is strategically using older gadgets alongside their latest devices. The newest iPhones are still essential for everyday communication, apps, and social media. Still, when it comes to photography, many are reaching for their old iPhones or old digital cameras to achieve the desired nostalgic look. Surprisingly, yesteryear technology has become a new hobby enabler!

This dual-device approach is a modern retro lifestyle. By carrying two phones, the young ones can seamlessly switch between present-day efficiency and retro charm, using each device for its strengths rather than seeking an all-in-one solution.

At the material time of this writing, I am actually digging out my old digital cameras, and trying to make them work! 😊

The Resurgence of Physical Media

resurgence of physical media

This retro nostalgic wave extends beyond photography. The Youngtro movement is also fueling a resurgence in physical media, including printed photos and photo books. According to a report by The New York Post, Gen Z is printing nearly twice as many photographs as older generations. Unlike their millennial predecessors, who grew up at the peak of digital transformation, Gen Z is rediscovering the joy of tangible memories.

Physical prints offer a different kind of emotional connection that isn’t tied to algorithms, cloud storage, or digital backups. They represent a more mindful, intentional approach to memory preservation, allowing users to revisit their favorite moments in a more permanent way than an Instagram archive.

How the Trend Impacts the Secondary Market – The Retro Economy

Therefore, it is not surprising that the demand for old iPhones is surging. Devices once considered obsolete are now in high demand, often selling for more than their perceived functional value. The iPhone SE (first generation) is now being sold for over SGD$180 on second-hand marketplaces.

The retro enabler trend mirrors the resurgence of disposable cameras and vintage film cameras, proving that technological “outdatedness” can transform into cultural relevance when framed through the right lens.

The Psychology Behind the Youngtro Movement

My take is that the Youngtro trend could represent a desire to slow down in an era of digital overstimulation. By using an old iPhone as a secondary camera, users are making a statement—capturing moments with the intention of preserving the real moment in time. There’s a sense of detachment from the obsession with perfection that dominates social media today.

Furthermore, nostalgia has long been recognized as a source of comfort, helping people live mindfully by reconnecting with familiar past experiences. In today’s fast-paced digital landscape, where trends come and go overnight, the old-school look of early iPhone photography provides a sense of stability and timelessness.

Final Thoughts: The Future of the Youngtro Trend

Personally, I can understand this Youngtro trend or movement. I myself indulge in enjoying music from vinyl records as a hobby and a lifestyle even though I can easily access digital songs from Spotify or my digital music catalogue. I am also looking for music authenticity. Similarly, the vinyl music listening trend also drives up the vinyl record prices, where the retired singer’s record has become a collectible item!

The Youngtro movement is more than just a passing fad—it’s a reflection of how Gen Z views technology and self-expression. While they embrace innovation, they also recognize the emotional and value authenticity. This trend could even influence future product designs, with tech companies possibly considering merging or integrating yesteryear technology or form factors to capture this opportunity.
