Side Hustle: How Economic Pressures Are Driving the this Boom

How Economic Pressures Are Driving the Side Hustle Boom

My observation is that the concept of work and income is changing. People are embracing multiple income sources. In the yesteryear, or maybe in my era, taking extra jobs on the side, we call them part-time jobs. When I was young, my parents told me they were taking part-time jobs to supplement their income. Maybe I could have been mistaken about the name then, or perhaps the part-time job is now well-defined in modern times. That is the job available for people who only have a portion of time available to work. Now, we call them side hustle.

We often hear people on a day job will drive Grab service on the weekend. We also listen to stories about teacher spending their afternoons in the classroom and evenings tutoring online. These are not isolated cases but part of a growing movement redefining modern work—the Main Job + Hustle model.

This multiple-income stream idea is no longer the domain of just younger generations. Today, even Generation X, traditionally seen as advocates of stability, embraces this lifestyle. All because of the need for financial security and time flexibility. As economic landscapes shift, cultural attitudes start to change, and technology seems forever advancing, this model has become a lasting redefinition of the concept of work and income.

The Evolution of Work and Income

The evolution of work and income

For decades, the traditional 9-to-5 job was the cornerstone of financial stability. Workers would dedicate their entire time to work with the promise of job security. However, times have changed. The gig economy, the emergence of work platforms, rising costs of living, and the appeal of passion projects have led to a new way of working—one where individuals can supplement their main jobs with side hustles.

The younger ones, like the Millennials and Gen Z, could have adopted this model out of necessity and ambition. We are now also seeing Generation X joining this movement, drawn to its flexibility and opportunities. This shift reflects economic pressures and changing cultural priorities where purpose and autonomy in work take center stage.

Why the Main Job + Side Hustle Model is Thriving

1. Economic Pressures

inflation and rising cost of living key drivers to side hustle boom

We can all agree that the most significant key drivers will be Inflation and rising living costs. To add fuel to the fire, the trade wars brought about a global uncertainty that could force the reconfiguring of the global supply chain. The main job may be at risk. Hence, the Main Job + Hustle model helps workers mitigate these challenges by diversifying their income streams.

2. Flexibility of Time

For some, the appeal lies in the control over their schedules. Especially the younger ones, many use their side hustles as an outlet for passion projects while still fulfilling family and career obligations. Some use it to learn and gain experience. I have also heard an interesting story about older folks turning full-time as a Grab platform worker while converting their main job into a project basis as a hustle!

3. Technology Definitely Enable The Side Hustle Boom

Technology Platforms like Grab, Upwork, Etsy, and Shopify make it easier than ever to start a side hustle. Meanwhile, easy-to-use and easy-to-learn powerful graphic tools like Canva and AI ChatGPT are helping individuals scale their side businesses efficiently, regardless of age.

4. Cultural Shifts

The narrative around work has changed and evolved. It’s no longer just about climbing the corporate ladder. It is about ensuring income security and finding joy and fulfillment in work. This shift has made passion-driven side hustles more socially acceptable.

The Case for Upskilling

For anyone looking to fully embrace the Main Job + Hustle model, upskilling is not an option. It is a must. (For sure, driving Grab requires good driving skills.) To leverage platform work opportunities, the hustlers must familiarize themselves with the digital tools and trends to compete for hustle jobs.

Examples include:

  • Learning how to market products online through platforms like Instagram and TikTok.
  • Gaining proficiency in tools like Canva for designing promotional materials.
  • Exploring AI-powered platforms to improve efficiency.

The willingness to learn and adapt sets successful hustlers apart in this competitive landscape. For the older folks, sometimes, to pick up new digital skills, it may be necessary to unlearn and relearn as well.

Challenges of the Main Job + Side Hustle Lifestyle

The adoption of the main job + side hustle model needs to be sustainable. It can be quite challenging and has an impact on the lifestyle.

1. Burnout – Not Easy for Too Much Of Side Hustles

Juggling multiple roles can lead to mental and physical exhaustion, particularly for those in high-demand jobs. Extra income is always welcome, but not at the expense of health.

2. Time Management

Getting adept at time management is a must for this model to work. The line between work and personal life can blur, making it essential to prioritize and schedule effectively.

Employment contracts often include clauses that restrict outside work. It’s essential to navigate these agreements carefully to avoid conflicts.

What This Shift Means for the Future of Work

employers must recognize the growing independent of their workforce

It is a tricky time for Employers. Employers probably must recognize the growing independence of their workforce. We can always argue that if a worker is paid well enough, then there is no need for a worker to look for alternative income. On the other hand, it is also hard for Employers to guarantee income security to the worker. Because long gone are the days of ïron-rice” bowl, especially when we are in an ever-changing landscape now.

The Main Job + Hustle model also reflects broader societal trends. Not only that the hustler is looking for income security, they are also looking for purpose, passion driven project and to gain more experiences.

For hustlers to participate in this model, they must work out their sustainable model. They must navigate the dual-work lifestyle with care. Otherwise, everything will become meaningless.

Final Thoughts on Main Job + Side Hustle

The Main Job + Hustle model is not just a trend—it’s an evolution of the work and income model. This approach allows some to adapt to economic challenges while exploring personal passions. For others, this offers them flexibility in time. However, for this lifestyle to be truly rewarding, it must be sustainable.

As work continues to evolve, the ability to balance stability with creativity will be the hallmark of success. This is not just about surviving the future of work—it’s about thriving in it.
